[ loki sighs. mortals. so primitive. he stands besides steve, shoulder to shoulder. then he raises his hand, his finger pointed at the air. and . . . he draws. for a moment, there's nothing but air. but colour slowly appears, filling the spaces, blooming. ]

[Steve stands, staring at the color blossoming in front of him. It's like the art is being born right out of thin air. His hand reaches out, wanting to touch, but he pulls it back.]

Amazing...

Magic does not need supplies or tricks. Magic taps into the soul.

[He already knows where this is going to go but regardless, Steve reaches out and points his finger where the color is.

Clearly, nothing happens.]

My soul must not be as colorful.

[ he clicks his tongue, vaguely bemused before moving behind steve. his fingers travel up his hand. it feels cool to the touch. loki never feels warm after all. ]

[It's been awhile since someone was close to him, like this. Steve tenses for a moment but then relaxes once more. It takes a second for him to concentrate and try to feel what this magic is, coming from Loki.

Finally, there is a splash of blue and green. Steve lets out a small whoop of excitement, turning his head around to look at Loki.]

Was that you? Or me?

[dothelokimotion]

[ loki's voice drifts over, cool breath brushing against steve's ear. ]

It's you, of course. I'm only helping you tap into it.

[brooklyn_boy]

[The coolness makes him almost shiver. Steve stays looking at Loki for moment, awed, and then goes back to the art.

He doesn't know quite what he's doing but more blue appears. A brush of silver and red.]

How...do you control it?

[dothelokimotion]

You don't control magic. You feel it and direct it where you want it to go.

[ magic is different from pure energy. it's not used to power machines. it is something internal, that calls within you. ]

[brooklyn_boy]

[That doesn't help all that much. Steve takes a deep breath and tries to just feel what was inside him. His soul? The magic?

There's another bit of red and then nothing once more. He tries again, getting frustrated, but he's clearly overthinking it, now.]

You make it look so easy...

[dothelokimotion]

Of course. I have centuries of experience while you are doing this for the first time. And you are unused to tackling the world on this particular . . . level.

You prefer reality.

[brooklyn_boy]

Reality is all I have.

[He concentrates harder and it seems to make it all worse. Like trying to hold onto sand with a sieve. Steve's frustration grows into something almost tangible as his body tenses back up.]

I'll get it, though. [He's too stubborn not to.]

[ loki moves away slightly, his voice gentle ]

There's no need to master this in one setting. These things take time.

[brooklyn_boy]

[Steve turns and grabs Loki's hand with his own, not wanting him to move too far away.]

I did it for a second!

[It's not in him to surrender at the first sign of trouble. But then again, he was essentially using Loki like a magic wand. Reluctantly, he loosens his grip.]

Unless you think I should...learn something, first?

[dothelokimotion]

[ his lips twitch slightly. steve seemed so morose. ]

You did. Which is impressive. And we can keep learning, but it is important to recognize that time and practice is the best teacher.

How am I supposed to practice when I need you here to even try?

[Steve cuts the irritation out of his voice because it's an honest question. Maybe there's a way he doesn't know about.]

[dothelokimotion]

[ loki hums softly, laying his hand on steve's chest. there's a warm glow that emerges from his hand, spreading over. after a few seconds, he drops it. ]

There. You should manage fine without my, ah, continued presence.

[brooklyn_boy]

[The warmth feels good. Steve's eyes close as he feels it spreading out. When it's over he looks down at his chest and then up at Loki, confused.]

What was that?

[dothelokimotion]

It is a little of my magic. It'll stay there for a while.

[brooklyn_boy]

[His eyes go wide.]

You gave me your magic?

[dothelokimotion]

[ loki rolls his eyes. ]

Only a little of it.

[brooklyn_boy]

[Steve stretches his fingers out and back in again as though testing it out. Turning away from Loki he extends his hand and tries to draw once more.

They're a rosy red burst of color and then nothing.]

I didn't know you could share this....

[dothelokimotion]

[ his expression softens, just a touch. ]

It's how I gained my magic. My mother passed it onto me.

[brooklyn_boy]

No wonder it's so important to you.

[He touches his chest where Loki had.]

Does it go back to you? When it's done with me?

[dothelokimotion]

[ loki nods slowly. ]

Eventually, yes. Your soul isn't used to storing that kind of power.
